Frequently Asked Questions About Full Metal Post Caps
FAQ 1: Our white, green, and patina copper postcaps are all treated with powder coating. Powder coating is a dry finishing process, using finely ground particles of pigment and resin which are electrostatically charged and sprayed onto the part to be coated. The parts to be coated are electrically grounded so that the charged powder particles projected at them adhere to the parts and are held there until melted and fused into a smooth coating in the curing oven. The result is a uniform, durable, high-quality finish that is also environmentally friendly.
FAQ 2: The natural weathering of copper is the result of the corrosive attack of airborne sulfur compounds. This leads to a gradual change in the surface color. the final color is different and depends on the location and local weather. Salt, moisture, sunlight and orientation can effect the final color. In general, copper changes in hues from a natural salmon through a progression of russet browns, grays and finally to a blue-green or green-gray patina.
FAQ 3: There is no permanent protection system that will protect copper from weathering. There are clear coatings that will provide short-term protection for exterior applications and longer-term protection for interior applications. Our copper postcaps are treated with a clear-coat to minimize discoloration during handling and installation; however, the coating will eventually break down due to ultra-violet rays and normal weatherization. Depending on the climate and sun exposure, this process can take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. Copper Metal Post Cap Maintenance
Copper is sensitive to air and oxidizes (tarnishes) faster in moist air. Unfortunately, no permanent protection system will keep copper from weathering. Our copper post caps have a temporary thin layer of lacquer or polyurethane to minimize discoloration during handling and installation, but the coating will eventually break down due to moisture, ultra-violet rays, pollution and other environmental conditions, and normal weatherization. The natural weathering of copper, resulting from the acidic attack of airborne sulfur compounds, gradually changes its surface color. The final color varies and depends on location and climate. Salt, moisture, sunlight, and orientation can all affect the final color. In general, copper progresses from a natural salmon color to a series of russet browns and grays, and finally to a blue-green or gray-green patina. Caps will vary in color as they weather, but eventually those variations will even out. Colored Post Cap Maintenance |
